Episodic sediment supply to alluvial fans: implications for fan incision and morphometry

چکیده
Abstract. Sediment supply is widely believed to be a key control on alluvial fan morphology and channel dynamics. Although the sediment natural fans rather episodic, experimental studies of often use constant rates, making it difficult relate dynamics magnitude frequency in field. This paper presents series experiments designed test impact episodic evolution We compare four experiments, each with same mean but different durations high- low-supply periods. The show that respond systematically temporal elongation oscillations: longer cycles generate flatter more trenched channels. These results highlight how basin conditions might morphologies: supply-limited basins intermittent are than expected. Our raise question whether models can adequately characterise therefore suggest modellers should include variability when investigating responses supply.

This volume presents a series of papers on the geomorphology, sedimentology and dynamics of alluvial fans, selected from those presented at the 'Alluvial Fans' Conference held in Sorbas, SE Spain in June 2003. The conference was sponsored primarily by the British Geomorphological Research Group and the British Sedimentological Research Group, both organizations affiliated to the Geological Soci...
متن کاملAlluvial fan facies of the Qazvin Plain: paleoclimate and tectonic implications during Quaternary
The present research focuses on a detailed facies description and interpretation of five alluvial fans of the Qazvin Plain. Beside the tectonic activity that leads to the localization of the fans on the northern margin of the Qazvin Plain, the climate has a significant role in the occurrence of their facies. The alluvial fans are divided into three facies groups: group 1, group 2, and group 3. ...
متن کاملLarge alluvial fans on Mars
[1] Several dozen distinct alluvial fans, 10 to 40 km long downslope, have been observed in highlands craters. Within a search region between 0 and 30 S, alluvial fan-containing craters were found only between 18 and 29 S, and they all occur at around ±1 km of the MOLA-defined Martian datum. Within the study area they are not randomly distributed but instead form three distinct clusters. Fans t...
متن کاملEvaluating the controls of shear stress, sediment supply, alluvial cover, and channel morphology on experimental bedrock incision rate
[1] We explored the dependence of experimental bedrock erosion rate on shear stress, bed load sediment flux, alluvial bed cover, and evolving channel morphology. We isolated these variables experimentally by systematically varying gravel sediment flux Qs and water discharge Qw in a laboratory flume, gradually abrading weak concrete “bedrock.” All else held constant, we found that (1) erosion ra...
